Today is one of those days that rattles the music world even though the events happened years ago. And while I never met John Lennon or Dimebag Darrell Abbott the fact that neither are still with us is still a hard pill to swallow.
But I like many am a fan of both despite how different their music styles are. As a kid I was exposed to The Beatles by my parents. Even then there was something that caught my ear, way before I knew anything about music. My favorites as a child were “Rocky Raccoon”, “Eleanor Rigby”, “Magical Mystery Tour”, and “A Day In The Life”. And that was as a kid. Now there isn’t anything from them I don’t listen to. And while yes The Beatles is a 4 piece you ask the non music lover about The Beatles they’ll bring up John Lennon or Paul McCartney.
Fast forward to my high school and college years, where I was the only one in my group of friends buying The Beatles “Anthology” albums, was the first time Pantera hit my ears and the amazing guitar work of Dimebag Darrell Abbott made me have a sudden rush of adrenaline for no reason other than the music. I remember hearing “Walk” and just getting pumped for no reason and then laughing cause it’s a song titled for something I can’t do. To this day that is my general ringtone.
Both these men, and countless others, have given us the gifts of their music. And while we no longer have them with us to make new music we do have the tons of music they made. And that music lives forever. So as long as we keep listening and sharing it and inspiring future generations then their spirits live on.
